Reflections on Time Well Spent

This week I took the opportunity to tie multiple flies with my son. When putting the las one in the holder, my son said, "wow look at all the flies we tied dad!" This brought me great joy and made me realize this occupation has developed into something I look forward to doing every week.

Last week we learned of boredom in the reading. I have noticed that fly tying comes to mind every time boredom sets in. It is an activity that requires me to think actively while using my hands. When listening to the song Flowers on the Wall by the Statler Brothers, my mind immediately picked up on the singer referencing boredom. He would rather be counting flowers on the wall because boredom set in with his previous activity. He also wanted people to know he was alright, and no help was needed.

  1. Hi Glenn! It made me so happy to hear that you and your son enjoy doing this activity together! Do you think that he looks forward to it as much as you do? I enjoyed listening to the song and agree with your points; it is interesting to think about the different tasks that cause boredom in various people, for example, I would be bored if I was told to count flowers on the wall but he seemed to enjoy that activity! I am curious what types of activities cause you to experience boredom and if there are changes you can make to make them more engaging?

    1. Yes there are activities that make me experience boredom. They are called homework-related activities. For this reason, my son probably doesn't look forward to it as much as I do.
