The Fourth Rubbery Experience

This week was a week of interruption. Originally I had planned on tying a mosquito fly. However, The stores were out of the necessary materials for this. So as a backup plan, I went with a rubber leg pattern instead. This gave me an opportunity to tie a new fly that has value around here in streams and rivers. The rubber leg is designed to imitate a stonefly nymph. When tied properly, this nymph will be the deadliest bait for trout.

One example of a space becoming a place in my life was my apartment during my undergraduate degree. When my wife and I first moved in, I thought of it as only a space to live. Fast forward 3 years, and we raised two kids within those walls. all of a sudden things as simple as the bathtub or kitchen corner were more important. The bathtub became a fun submarine that my kids would splash in. The  kitchen corner became a place of arts and crafts with the kids. What had been just empty common space before was now a place to build memories and cherished by both my wife and I.

My new occupation envelops a few aspects of space turning into place. For example, a room in my current living place is small. This room is is where I have been able to study. It contains utility devices that make noises at various times. When I was first in this room it was just a cramped area that didn't appeal to me. As I have been able to tie flies in it, the small space has become a getaway for me. The small area also makes it easy for me to watch my children while tying. My son had an experience with me where he asked if he could wrap some thread like me. This little moment being close doing my tying occupation was the first golden experience that made me truly enjoy tying in a small area.

In the future I can see myself taking my son to fly fish. The places We go will become new "places" like what is talked about in the chapter. These will be fishing holes that offer the chance to bond. I remember some of these from my childhood. They are places my dad and I went to fish. They are all bodies of water with only trees surrounding them. But they are places I cherish because of those special memories formed there.

  1. Hi Glenn! I don't know really anything about fishing so it's really cool to read about the details of each fly and what their purpose is. It was also cool to read about your connection to different fishing places. Do you feel like those special fishing areas and the room in your home that you've been using to tie flies in become more of a special place because of the memories tied to them, or because you spend time there consistently?

    1. I would say it is due to the memories associated with them. A room is just a room, but the memories in that room are what make it a place vs. space.

  2. Hey Glenn! I used the same apartment example as you did for my place experience. It's really neat how the people we share a space with make it special. In the reading I was super interested in the genealogical perspective of place. Did you have a great grandfather who was super into fishing or anything like that?
