Introduction to the Blog
Hello, and welcome to my blog. I will focus on the occupation of fly tying. For those who wonder what it is, it does not mean tying a string to a fly. That would be entertaining, but not productive. Fly tying is an art. You essentially take a plain shank hook and make it into a representation that will entice a fish to eat it. Flies can range from streamer size (think minnows) to midge sizes (smaller than diamond earring studs).
A little background on me. I was born and raised in my home. My father instilled the addiction to fishing in me from year one. For years I focused on hook, line, and casting lure fishing. This was my favorite occupation for years. About three years ago, a man introduced me to fly fishing. I had known about it but never tried it. It took me 30 minutes to catch my first fish on a fly. I was thrilled! After that, I wanted to pursue the art of fly fishing. However, I would not do it again until my wife made the mistake of buying me a fly rod and reel combo.
Once spring came, I was out on the river trying my best to catch fish. I thought the sport was cheap because each fly ranged from 85 cents to 99 cents. It soon dawned on me that my technique was poor. I would whip my fly off the end and lose it. Well, $35 worth of flies later, my wife was upset. I had to figure out a new technique or give up flyfishing altogether.
Fast forward to now, and my new occupation is tying flies. This will be a way to save money. I will ultimately be cutting out the middle man and getting the joy (or frustration) of developing my own new flies.
